June 4, 2006
Present: Pastor Craig and Jen Paschal, Clay Bader, Dan Corcoran, Dana Petersen, Leonard & Connie Goodell, Bill & Phyllis Johnson, Linda Starliper, Keith and Marjorie Nelson, Barb Cover, Jack & Mary Ann Ott, Howard Thomas
Clay Bader began the meeting at 11:31 a.m.
Finance: Dan Corcoran distributed a summary report for finances through May. Offerings and other income continue to be above budget making the need for transfers from the Vanguard (previously Wachovia) account unnecessary. Special offerings to date include $2,660 toward the New Orleans work trip, $124 for One Great Hour of Sharing, and $50 for Native American Awareness.
Leonard Goodell reported on the transfer of the investment account from Wachovia to Vanguard because the fees are cheaper.
Connie made a motion to accept the financial report. Phyllis seconded. The motion passed.
Trustees: Mary Ann Ott reported on several items including the sprinkler system needing adjustment. Morgan Darden will be mowing the lawn and we will pay her what has been paid in the past. A new nursery attendant has been hired. Discussion about holding a cleanup day led to a general consensus that rather than one big day, small groups should just get together when they can to tackle the storage room and kitchen. Leonard and Keith agreed to install a shelf in the kitchen.
Update on parsonage porch repairs: One bid has come in so far for $1,500 for Trex or $1,100 for redwood. Howard Thomas reported on his assessment of the porch and suggested the job is not too big and we could do it ourselves. There was general consensus that Trex rather than redwood would be used. A sign-up sheet will be put up to seek volunteers to help with this job. Also, the stairs to the back door of the sanctuary need to be repaired and Howard volunteered to do that.
Discussion about the church cleaning services followed. Mary Ann and Barb Cover will come up with a list of items that need to be addressed each week to clarify things with the cleaning crew.
Mary Ann summarized the Trustees’ requests as follows: Authorization to pay Morgan Darden to mow the lawn according to what we have paid in the past, authorization to go ahead with the porch repair, authorization to buy a new vacuum cleaner and authorization to finish the parsonage garage. Howard so moved. Phyllis seconded. Howard then amended the motion to cap the porch repair costs at $1,500. Keith seconded the amended. The motion passed.
WON Team: VBS is set for July 1 – August 4. The curriculum is already here and Connie Goodell will place a sign-up for helpers in the Fellowship Hall. Barb is continuing the monthly lunches at the nursing home the last Tuesday of each month. Jen reported that the Wednesday afternoon ministry will plan just a few special events through the summer.
Parents’ Night Out - June 28 from 6:30-9 p.m.
The adult ministry group has LOTS of events and gatherings planned for the summer.
There will be a community potluck with the theme “Old Fashioned Summer Cookout” will be held July 19 in place of the usual 1 st and 19 in place of the usual 1 st and 3 rd Wednesday night dinners, which are continuing through the summer.
Preliminary discussion about the Christmas dinner led to two ideas: hold two “sessions” or move it to the Community Center. Dana Petersen noted that there will be a small fee associated with renting the Community Center.
Connie made a motion that we hold the Christmas dinner at the Community Center. Phyllis seconded. Motion passed.
PPR: Linda Starliper distributed the clergy assessment report.
Pastor’s report: Craig reported on a Wednesday yoga class that meets in the Fellowship Hall and his desire to offer scholarships to church members or others who would like to attend the class. Craig noted the instructor charges $8 per session. Leonard made a motion to offer scholarships to the yoga class from the community outreach fund. Linda and Connie seconded. Motion passed.
Craig has been coordinating a work trip to Shiprock planned for October 9-11 with Four Corners Native American Ministries and the United Methodist Church in Shiprock.
The meeting adjourned at 12:27 p.m.
The next work Work of the Church meeting will be July 2.
Respectfully submitted,
Dana Petersen
